Vase for Artificial Flowers: Size, Weight and Stability

A vase for artificial flowers should be a third of the total height and weighted. See how to pick size, filling and style; porous or mosaic vases work too.

Vase for Artificial Flowers: Size, Weight and Stability

For artificial flowers, choose a vase that is heavy enough to carry the arrangement and takes up roughly a third of the total height. No water is needed, so a porous or handmade vase works too, as long as it stands steady.

A vase for artificial or silk flowers has different demands than one for fresh cut flowers. You don't have to worry about leaks or about a neck wide enough for stems in water, but weight, proportion and looks matter more. Here is how to pick the right size, keep a tall arrangement stable and choose a material that suits it.

Which vase suits artificial flowers?

Without water, you have more freedom than with fresh flowers. A wide bowl, a slim cylinder or a round vase with a narrow opening all work. Keep an eye on three things:

  • The opening should hold the stems firmly, or you fill the vase so the stems stay put.
  • The vase should weigh more than the arrangement can pull over. Tall branches and silk flowers on wire stems act like a sail.
  • The colour and texture of the vase should complement the flowers, not compete with them. Artificial flowers are often colourful already.

A mosaic vase is a strong choice with a calm arrangement. The hand-set glass pieces give the vase character, so a simple bunch of silk flowers or a few branches already looks finished. With a multicoloured bouquet, go for a mosaic in a single colour family.

What vase size goes with an artificial flower arrangement?

A rule of thumb that works: the arrangement is one and a half to two times as tall as the vase. So the vase takes up roughly a third to 40 percent of the total height. A few examples:

  • Windowsill, 40 cm arrangement: vase 15 to 20 cm tall.
  • Sideboard or console, 70 cm arrangement: vase 25 to 35 cm tall.
  • Large room with a tall arrangement of 100 to 120 cm: vase 40 to 60 cm tall, or a floor vase.

How do you stop a tall arrangement from tipping over?

Artificial flowers on long stems are top-heavy. The arrangement tips a vase more often than a bump does. The fix is to add weight, and you can do it out of sight:

  • Fill the bottom with sand, pebbles or large stones. Stones are the steadiest, because they can't shift.
  • Use floral foam made for artificial flowers to hold the stems in place.
  • Choose a vase with a wide base. A round or tapering vase with a small foot looks lovely, but tips sooner.
  • Keep the vase away from the edge of a cabinet or windowsill if children or pets are around.

A handmade mosaic vase already has more weight than a plain vase of the same size, thanks to the glass pieces and grout. That helps with stability, but it doesn't replace a proper filling.

Can a porous or unglazed vase hold artificial flowers?

Yes, and that is one of the big advantages. Terracotta and other pottery are porous and less suited to fresh flowers in water, as you can read in our article on whether your vase is watertight. With artificial flowers that doesn't matter. You don't need to test for leaks, so you can use a vase that would need an inner glass for fresh flowers.

If you also want to use the vase for fresh flowers now and then, put a glass or plastic liner inside. That way you can switch between artificial flowers and a fresh bunch without fuss.

Do artificial flowers and branches work together in one vase?

They do, and it stops an arrangement from looking too smooth. Combine silk flowers with a few real or dried branches, as described in our article on branches in a vase. Keep the whole thing to two or three materials and colours, or it gets busy.

With long branches, pick a heavier vase. A 1 metre branch in a vase only 25 cm tall always needs extra weight at the bottom.

How much upkeep does a vase with artificial flowers need?

No fresh water, no green film and no wilted flowers. An occasional dusting with a soft brush or dry cloth is enough. With a mosaic vase, wipe the glass surface and the grout lines gently, without abrasive products.

Choosing artificial flowers that last for years can be a sustainable choice, provided they really are used for a long time. For background on materials and waste, see Milieu Centraal.

Why choose a handmade mosaic vase for artificial flowers?

Because the vase outlasts the arrangement. Every piece from Masr Potten & Vazen is handmade: the glass tesserae are cut, laid and grouted by hand, inspired by the Egyptian mosaic tradition. No two vases are identical, and small colour differences are part of the handwork. If you want a vase in a particular colour or size, or with a company logo for an office or hospitality space, custom work is possible. A custom piece takes six to ten weeks on average from approval to delivery, with progress photos along the way. Browse the vase collection or request a no-obligation quote.

Frequently asked questions

What size vase should you choose for artificial flowers?

Pick a vase that covers a third to 40 percent of the arrangement's total height. For a 70 cm arrangement, that means a vase of about 25 to 35 cm. For a heavy or top-heavy arrangement, choose a wider base or add weight at the bottom.

Does a vase for artificial flowers need to be watertight?

No. Artificial flowers need no water, so a porous or unglazed vase works too. If you also want to use the vase for fresh flowers, place a glass or plastic liner inside so the water can't soak into the wall.

How do you make a vase heavier without it showing?

Fill the bottom with sand, pebbles or stones, and add foam on top to fix the stems if needed. The filling sits hidden beneath the arrangement. Stones are the steadiest, because they can't shift when someone moves the vase.
